| Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in the
United States. There are approximately 80 suicides a day. 20% of elderly
individuals who commit suicide saw their healthcare provider the same
day, and approximately 70% of these elderly individuals saw their
healthcare provider in the same month. Four times as many men as women
die from suicide attempts.
Risk factors
Risk factors for suicide attempts include the following:
- Alcohol or substance abuse, or history of.
- Depression, or history of.
- Previous attempts.
- Hopelessness.
- Family history of suicide.
- External stressors.
- Sudden changes in one’s life (examples include divorce,
sudden geographical changes)
