What is Candidiasis?
Candidiasis of the vaginal area, otherwise known as a yeast infection is one of the most common presenting complaints to an urgent care center. The organism is Candida albicans, which is common in about twenty percent of sexually active women and about forty percent of pregnant women. This organism is common on our skin, when this organism encounters a moist environment, or our normal bacterial flora is killed off it colonizes rapidly to cause very irritating symptoms. It is common in skin folds, under breasts, and in the groin area. In women it becomes a major irritant to the vaginal area. This is also the main culprit in diaper rash. The area gets moist, the diaper holds the moisture in and we now have a cutaneous (superficial) skin infection.
What is the cause of Candidiasis (Yeast Infection?)
There are few common risk factors: Being a diabetic, using steroids, using certain antibiotics is one of the most common causes, pregnancy, cotton underwear, and poor hygiene.
It should be noted this is more uncommon as women age.
What are the symptoms of Candidiasis (Yeast Infection?)
Itching, burning, whitish discharge (cottage cheese type appearance),swelling to the area, pain during intercourse, minor tears to the vaginal wall during intercourse which frequently cause concern. Male sex partners may get symptoms, however this is very unusual.
What is the treatment for Candidiasis (Yeast Infection?)
Over the counter anti-fungal creams are very effective. The main complaint is that they are messy and uncomfortable. A five day course, daily is effective. Pill form of anti-fungals like Diflucan can be treated with one dose at a very effective cure rate. Yogurt is also helpful, however one must eat quite a bit if one has a full blown infection. I have recommended three cups a day . The success rate is poor if the infection is full blown. CONCERN: If there is no resolution of symptoms, it is strongly advised to be checked by a provider as an (STD) Sexually Transmitted Disease could also be concurrent.
Please use caution when looking at other websites. There are a few that seem very reputable and are touting symptoms such as odor with yeast infections. If there is an odor most likely another diagnosis is going on. Bacterial vaginosis is commonly confused with yeast infections, and does have an odor.
