Movies

From time to time I use videos as a therapy tool. I have recommended specific videos to my patients, and have used them in group therapy with both adolescents and adults. Movies are a powerful medium and when used at an optimal time during the course of therapy along with other modalities, can help induce change.

  1. Ordinary People
Helpful with dysfunctional families, mother-son, father-son, husband-wife relationship issues, as well as how the loss of a loved one impacts the family.
  2. Dances With Wolves
Explores how one character is “dancing between two worlds.” Describes the changes and ultimate transformation undergone by the character John Dunbar from one world to another, from the White to the Native American, and what he learns along the way about himself. A great movie to use with regard to transitioning from one life period to another.
  3. My Life
A great movie to recommend where issues concern death and dying. Great ideas and
techniques, especially towards the end of the movie. The Michael Keaton character comes to terms with his own mortality, and actually videotapes messages to his son that, after he passes on, are to be played at critical stages in his son’s life.
  4. The Prince of Tides
For anyone who has dealt with sexual abuse issues, a very important and helpful movie.
  5. The Doctor
With William Hurt. Anyone in the healthcare profession should definitely see this movie.
  6. Birdy
With Matthew Modine. A very interesting portrayal of schizophrenia.
  7. Mother
With Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds. A humorous movie with serious moments that examines mother-son relationships, especially with an enveloping and overprotective mother.
  8. Breakfast Club
Great movie. I have shown use this movie in group therapy with adolescents. Examines the differences between the central characters with their vastly differing personalities, how their upbringing affected each of the characters, but when coming together and disclosing to each other, recognizing they are all so similar.

If you have certain movies or books you would like to recommend, please feel free to e-mail them to info@peaceandhealing.com.

Songs

Peace and Healing.com recommends a variety of songs that could be used in therapy, concentrating of course on lyrics and themes, songs that have been written about personal tragedies, experiences, and transitions in life. Obviously the enjoyment of music is subjective and tastes vary from individual to individual.

  1. Thrasher, by Neil Young
This is a great song in terms of loss of friends and changing your path in life.
  2. Desperado, by the Eagles.
  3. Souvenirs, John Prine
  4. Father and Son, Cat Stevens
  5. Late for the Sky, Jackson Browne
  6. For a Dancer, Jackson Browne
  7. I Thought I was a Child, Jackson Browne
  8. These Days, Jackson Browne
  9. For Every Man, Jackson Browne
  10. Daddy’s Tune, Jackson Browne
  11. The Only Child, Jackson Browne
  12. Cats in the Cradle, Harry Chapin
  13. Fast Car, Tracy Chapman
  14. Rhymes and Reasons, John Denver
  15. Poems, Prayers and Promises, John Denver
  16. Castles in the Air, Don McLean
  17. Winter, Tory Amos. Tory Amos’ CD Little Earthquakes is powerful. The song Winter deals specifically with issues concerning self-esteem, growing up, and father-daughter, father-son relationships. The song is specifically about a father-daughter; however, the song has been extremely meaningful to me. There are many songs and issues presented on this tape, from rape to sex abuse. I highly recommend it.

Music in general is a powerful medium, and songs can be useful therapeutic tools for individuals in therapy as they change paths in life and experience personal growth. We will continue to add more songs from time to time. Please feel free to send your recommendations to info@peaceandhealing.com.
